Keeping the Voices Community On Topic With Flagging

As a Community Manager, I spend a lot of time moderating conversations on Trulia Voices. Most frequently, that means sorting through content that’s been flagged by users to be removed.  These flags help us keep the conversations on Trulia Voices focused on topics that matter most to our community—like buying, selling, and renting a home, what it’s like to live in an area, and tips for marketing new listings—so homebuyers, sellers, and real estate professionals alike are able to get information and make valuable connections.

The “Flag” menu is located under any piece of user-generated content within Trulia Voices.  When you click the “Flag” link, a window of different types of flags will be displayed: Spam, Duplicate, Off-topic, Inappropriate and Copyright.

What Each Flag Means

  • Spam: The content is either an advertisement or solicitation of some sort. This includes things like listing announcements and answering your own question.
  • Duplicate: The content was posted multiple times. You should flag all duplicate content to ensure that it’s removed.
  • Off-topic: The content is posted in the wrong category type and/or is not related to real estate.
  • Inappropriate: The content is either offensive, not related to real estate, or doesn’t relate to the original question.
  • Copyright: The content is suspected of infringing on copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, publicity, privacy, or other intellectual property or other rights.

When content from Trulia Voices is flagged, the Community Team ultimately decides whether or not it violates our guidelines. Disagreements over flags happen, but our goal is to enforce guidelines reasonably and impartially. We rely on our users to help patrol the community, and flagging has proven to be an effective way for members to provide feedback. So please, continue to flag content you think is questionable to keep Trulia Voices a helpful and productive place for everyone.

As always, we value your expert insights and love learning from you. If you have any questions about Trulia Voices, email community@trulia.com.
